Eating a (mostly) dead lobster in Taiwan

This doesn't have anything to do with open source and Neuros, but I just had to post it.

This was taken at a restaurant in taiwan where Sophia and I ate with the gregarious head of a stamping factory.  Relationship building (often facilitated by food and liquor) is fairly important stuff in China, and this lunch was a good example.  We had a huge feast, with this the centerpeice dish, raw lobster complete with blinking LEDs.  Also, note that the head is still moving a little.

See that little glass on the side with the two antenae as makeshift stir sticks?  That was some kind of liquor mixed with some kind of bodily fluid from said lobster.  Of course, you can always say no thanks (which Sophia did) but it's better to be a gracious guest and accept when you can (I'm very gracious).  This is recognized by everyone as a serious part of doing business in China because the personal relationships determine so much of the way business is done there.

Another story

Sophia told me another lobster story where she and a couple colleges went to a Japanese restaurant in Taiwan, something like a Japanese steak house.  They ordered lobster which was brought to the table alive and then cut up and cooked on the hot plate.  Apparantly the cut up lobster peices were still putting up such a fight that the cook had to cover the lobster with a pan to contain it.  As you can imagine, Sophia said it was a very uncomfortable situation, and I'm sure it was no picnic for the lobster either.

YO

That's just about the most frightening dish I've ever seen. I mean, I've had sea cucumber, I've had plenty of strange foods, but there's just something intimidating about being expected to eat a live animal with blinking lights involved.

Obligatory reference....

"Ooo, look who knows so much! It just so happens that your lobster is only mostly dead"

Whew...

...glad I just work on code. You go right ahead and build those relationships. Crustaceans and electronics don't belong together in my book.
