Apple: "Accountants Forced Us to Charge for Firmware Upgrade"

In general, I'm actually a fan of Apple.  I think they've brought a ton of innovative and well exectuted products to the market, but some of their doubletalking lately is too funny not to poke some fun.

Now, they are charging $2 for a firmware upgrade to the macbooks, which is fine, they can charge for whatever they want.  But to blame it on the accountants is just hilarious

From CNET Blog "The nominal distribution fee for the 802.11n software is required in order for Apple to comply with generally accepted accounting principles for revenue recognition, which generally require that we charge for significant feature enhancements, such as 802.11n, when added to previously purchased products," An Apple spokesperson said in a statement.  Wow, I sure hope those accountants don't find out that Apple and Pepsi gave away a million iTunes downloads a few years ago!

GAAP

They can't blame it on GAAP. See:

Any other open source company charges for download?

Have you seen any open source company charging for any download? I really don't want to compare Apple TV to OSD.
